I'm alive, and tired, but feeling better. Had a fun time at Philcon, especially once I was able to talk. Caught up with some folks I hadn't seen in a while.

Returned home to find a copy of my French translation waiting for me, the one I'd ordered from France, as I have no idea when my box of author copies will arrive. It is so little and cute! And in French and everything!

All About Romance review

A C review from All About Romance. The reviewer gives clear reasons why the book ultimately didn't work for her; she has some good comments.

It's cool to be reviewed by a site that led me to a lot of my early romance reads!

This one is pretty short, but the reviewer liked the book. Review at A Romance Review.

[info]oyceter has comments on The Duchess. She likes Sylvie. *hearts Sylvie*

My copies of The Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica arrived yesterday, with the reprint of "17 Short Films About Hades and Persephone." The American editions are now published by Running Press, here in Philadelphia. I think I've now received all my contributor copies for 2008--I shall have to find time to write some new short stories to send out!

My one hundred word flash fiction, "Unlimited Minutes," got a mention in a review: "Frenzy: 60 Stories of Sudden Sex is an excellent anthology of short stories edited for Cleis Press by Alison Tyler. The book revels in hot, quick sex. Erotica is particularly suited to short forms because brevity can build a real sense of anticipation that would grow flaccid at greater length; witness Elspeth Potter's "Unlimited Minutes" at not quite half a page." A review from Mrs. Giggles, who is a prolific and well-known reviewer in romancelandia, even though English is not her first language. She gave it a 76, which for her means "Flawed but readable." I'll take it!

She liked Sylvie! Yay!

book release party

I am still aglow from my book release party on Sunday. It was so lovely to see all those friends there to celebrate with me, even though I didn't get a chance to exchange more than a few words with any of you. *hugs you all* It was a bit overwhelming. All I could say, all evening, was "wow, a lot of people showed up." Writer colleagues, and college friends, and media fandom friends, and choir friends, and all kinds of friends.

I have a last piece of the awesome chocolate cake waiting for me at home tonight.

Special thanks to [info]nifwitch and [info]jen_sous_chef for inviting me to their lovely bookstore, and [info]drinkingcocoa and [info]yrlnry for the catering, and [info]feklar for help with the wine.

Deadly Vixens blogpost

[cross-posted, for those who couldn't read the blog post over at Deadly Vixens.]

The Duchess, Her Maid, The Groom and Their Lover is my first published novel, and though there are no paranormal elements, it's set in a fantasy world. More accurately, it's a land of Fantasy, of sexual fantasy. I thought the story would be best served by creating an alternate world, just enough different from our own world to free the reader's imagination but enough the same so that she doesn't have trouble navigating the story. Also, it was just plain fun to integrate real historical details with ones I made up completely, or borrowed from different time periods. It was even more fun to worldbuild in ways that would deepen the story's meaning.

Cut for length. )

I'm told there was uncomplimentary "liveblogging" of my book this weekend on a couple of popular review blogs. Feel free to read and comment yourself, if wank entertains you, but I don't plan to. There's no point. Anything I say will likely be regarded as irrelevant.

I somehow missed it when [info]drinkingcocoa posted her non-objective review of the duchess book; I was at Philcon. Here it is.
